2015 ACRC Bowl Series Day II: Epic Games as Titans Collide
The weather showed extremes—from warm and sunny to cold rain—and the matches played on Day II of the ACRC Bowl Series in Charlotte were no less extreme and unpredictable. Crowds at the Rugby Athletic Center witnessed some amazing rugby as Saturday's action managed to top Friday night in level of intensity.
Vols, Gamecocks Battle to the Wire in SCRC Final
The Southeastern Collegiate Rugby Conference final was everything advertised as the two top teams in the SCRC came ready to claim the Cup. A very well-played defensive match saw the lead change five times. As the clock counted down South Carolina appeared to have things locked up as trench battles raged deep in Tennessee territory. In the final minutes a heroic downfield drive and relentless pounding in front of the try line led to a Tennessee try in the final minute and 23-22 victory for the Volunteers. Indiana Brings It in Battle With Kutztown
In an epic grind pitting two of the nation's top teams, the 2015 Big 10 champion Indiana Hoosiers proved their greatness with a dramatic win over Rugby East champs Kutztown. The Golden Bears found themselves playing catchup for most of the game, nipping at Indiana's heels but failing to catch the Hoosiers as the Boys from Bloomington notched a 38-34 victory. AIC Speeds Past Clemson
Battle-tested Clemson faced an unfamiliar attack in AIC's aggressive running game. In a match that was chippy on both sides, Clemson dotted down first but AIC answered back three minutes later and mostly controlled the pace of the game from there. An intense, physical match led to penalties on both sides and a midfield captain's meeting with the ref. Try Time for Stony Brook's Sheridan
The Stony Brook - Cincinnati game looked to be a close one with the score tied at 14 at the half. That was before Tommy Sheridan got busy, scoring three of his four tries in the second frame as the Seawolves claimed the 36-14 win over the Bearcats and their second straight bowl victory at the ACRC's. Delaware Overcomes Iona in #QuinnForTheWin Ice Bucket Challenge
The 2015 Bowl Series also encompassed a big match between Iona and Delaware, along with a big cause—the battle against ALS on behalf of Iona rugby alum Pat Quinn. The game saw Iona strike first but run up against the Blue Hens' formidable defense, falling into a 12-22 hole at halftime. UNT Squeaks by Rutgers in Dramatic Finish
University of North Texas and Rutgers may not have been familiar to each other, but this game was extremely well matched. It was Rutgers by 1 at the half. A penalty kick made it 16-12 but that was all the scoring they could muster against a fierce Mean Green defense. 'D' Wins the Day for Bonnies
Another close match in a weekend full of them, the 11:20 am St Bonaventure vs Western Michigan University game stood at 5-all at the half. A WMU converted try in the 77th minute brought the Broncos within two, a narrow margin protected by the Bonnies over subsequent minutes added to the scoreboard time by the refs.
