Champions do Battle at the ACRC7s
This spring has been unprecedented in the number of collegiate sevens tournaments. With so many regional events producing cup champions, the very best teams are eager to test their abilities on a national level—which is where the ACRC7s in Virginia Beach come in.
This weekend (April 25-26), some of the very best in the nation will travel to Virginia Beach, most carrying momentum from recent victories. Here are a few of the standouts.
Miami University
Miami University of Ohio won the Mid American Conference championship last weekend, overcoming a formidable Bowling Green State University. Both teams came into the cup match undefeated on the day, and both left it as national qualifiers—but only Miami could claim the MAC Championship.
Kutztown University
Kutztown has mostly steamrolled the competition this spring, most recently dominating Stony Brook at the Empire Rugby Conference sevens tournament in Binghamton. Also under the Golden Bears' belt are tournament victories at URugby Philadelphia, in Raleigh, and on their own turf.
American International College
AIC won the second round of the Empire Sevens series, otherwise known as the snow bowl, defeating Stony Brook in the final amid blizzard-like weather. This is one team proven to be able to win in all field conditions.
St. Joseph's University
St. Joe's and Temple, both coming to Virginia Beach, have had excellent springs. St. Joes edged the Owls last weekend at Rutgers in a virtual replay of the Keystone Sevens final at Shippensburg two weeks earlier, which also saw the Hawks just barely escape the Owls. It'll be fun to see what these two powerful programs accomplish at the Virginia Beach Sportsplex this weekend.
Stony Brook
Stunned by Kutztown last week, the Seawolves have nevertheless enjoyed a successful spring and are tops in the Empire Rugby Conference in sevens play. While overshadowed by the loss to the Golden Bears, Stony Brook prevailed over league rival Colgate last weekend in a 24-22 thriller.
