There are plenty of back stories behind the upcoming action at URugby Sevens Philadelphia. With some of the best teams in the nation scheduled to meet on the pitch this Saturday and Sunday, expect fierce competition and heated rivalries.
Kutztown Men & Women
The Kutztown Men racked up an astounding 34-2 record last spring in sevens play. With most starters returning, the Golden Bears have rarely stumbled this spring, currently standing at 5th in the Goff Rugby Report coach’s poll.
Meanwhile, the Kutztown Women are 11-1 this spring, a great follow up to their 2014 MARC conference championship title and third-in-the-nation finish in the USA Rugby Fall Championships.
Mountaineers Seek Seawolves
West Virginia would probably relish a rematch with 2014 Empire Conference champions Stony Brook, who narrowly defeated them in last fall’s ACRC Bowl Series in Charlotte.
Ivy League Aspirations
Columbia, which has been putting new emphasis on sevens play with a full schedule this spring, might enjoy another crack at Stony Brook, who shut them out 26-0 two weeks ago.
The women of Princeton and Penn finished with identical records and only one point apart in fifteens play last fall. Who’s the better team? Bragging rights will be on the line in their likely first meeting since the fall.
Owls and Knights
Last weekend, the Keystone Sevens in Shippensburg saw Temple beat powerhouse West Virginia on the way to appearing in the title game. Meanwhile Rutgers looks to build on the momentum of its Bowl Final victory at the Keystones last weekend.
