URugby Recaps Matches of the Week
The key URugby matchups didn't disappoint yesterday. A number of high-stakes games took place this weekend as conference standings begin to settle out in advance of the American Collegiate Rugby Championship Bowl Series (Charlotte, N.C., Nov. 21-22). Sixteen top teams from eight conferences will get invites to play in the series.
Iona College 43 - St. Bonaventure 13
Rugby East's Iona hosted the Bonnies on Homecoming weekend. A great matchup that started off tight. The halftime score had Iona up 12-8 after the Bonnies took an early lead. But the second half was all Iona College. Iona Coach Bruce McLane plans to run the table through to the ACRC Bowl Series. He has his team on a roll.
Kutztown 36 - Penn State 28
Kutztown moved to 4-0 in the Rugby East with their win over Penn State. The Bears hold the top spot tied with Army also at 4-0 in the conference. Kutztown and Army meet next Saturday at West Point.
Army 73 - Buffalo 13
The Black Knights of Army somehow seem to be flying under the radar as they sneak to 4-0 in the Rugby East Conference with a convincing win over the University at Buffalo. The West Pointers scored 6 tries in each half to put down the Buffalos. Army vs. Kutztown Saturday.
St. Joe's 50 - Temple 24
The 50-24 win put Saint Joseph’s at the top of Keystone East. Temple held on to second in the East and will travel to West Virginia next Saturday to play for an ACRC bid to Charlotte. WVU defeated Pittsburgh 46-14 Saturday to win the Keystone West. St. Joe's will host Pitt Saturday. A win will seal their plans for Charlotte.
Clemson 27 - Virginia Tech 20
ACRL leader Clemson moved to 5-0 in the conference with a hard fought victory over the Hokies. Virginia Tech played tough this past weekend falling short but giving themselves a chance to win scoring a try with just 10 minutes to play to close within seven.
About the ACRC Bowl Series
High-level collegiate rugby competition comes to Charlotte, N.C. Nov. 21-22, 2014 with the inaugural American Collegiate Rugby Championship Bowl Series. This series of matches in traditional bowl format brings the very best college rugby teams from around the country to Charlotte’s Rugby Athletic Center, a sports and events venue located just three miles from downtown.
The ACRC Bowl Series will feature eight championship bowl games over three days. The tournament is managed by URugby, a division of Sevens Sports LLC, a sports event management and marketing company specializing in creating great experiences around the sport of rugby.
Competition gets underway under the lights Friday evening Nov. 21, and heats up Saturday as the best college teams in the nation take to the pitch to compete for hardware and glory.
